I Was Not Hire-able.

Throughout the early 2010s, I was attending Cornish College of the Arts for Fine Arts but due to unfortunate circumstances, I had to quit and “move on” with my life. Although I was not in a good place, I still wanted to pursue something that I was super passionate about and I had to figure out how I can make things work.

The big thing that really hurt my self-esteem was that I wasn’t getting hired to do any kind of work. No matter how much I shared on social media (Facebook, Tumblr, Twitter), I did not get a fish to bite. I got definitely got a following going on but the audience I got weren’t the ones that needed work done and to be blunt, I was looking for the wrong audiences and probably didn’t know exactly what I wanted.

I Had To Change My Game Plan.

One day I had a thought, “I’ve been wasting all this time waiting for people to hire me. Although I’ve been making so much social media content and practicing my craft, I still need to make money from what I do creatively so I can continue to this long”. From that thought and seeing how other creators make money from their craft, I came to the conclusion that I need to create my own business. While I can continue getting better with my skills and become “more hire-able”, it’s still such an undermined amount of time until I can get hired and if I created my own business, I can control the outcome way better. And so I did.

The Successes.

Fast forward to a few years later, 2016-2020, I have done over 30 local art events, festivals, some conventions and have been able to use all the skills I’ve learned to help other people start their projects, create branding, have done work in video games, etc. What’s most rewarding from all of this is that I was able to do something I love while finding so many other things I am passionate about. Which is helping other people through my skills and the brand I’ve created, JDoArts & Illustrations where I spread mental health awareness through the works I create for it.

The Moral of The Story.

The moral of the whole story is that you should not put your fate into someone else’s hands, especially an invisible person’s hands and when you put that energy into the right action, you’ll get rewarded greatly.
